Troy Calhoun: next HC?

Sources confirmed that Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun has interviewed for the job. I listed him as a dark horse candidate on Monday but it appears to be picking up some steam. Guerry Smith mentioned on the radio today he was a target and sure enough his son has been making some Tulane related Twitter follows this evening πŸ‘€. Frequently where there is smoke there is fire.

Why would he want to leave his alma mater after 17 years? Perhaps, we look to our old friend Willie Fritz for answers. The last chance for a man in his late 50s to summit a new peak. We all know Tulane has an outside chance at the playoff next year. Calhoun will likely never be able to reach that height at his current station. Additionally, he has been linked to other major jobs (Oregon State, Duke). His agent is certainly putting out feelers at the very least. Read up on this guy he’s a home run.

Calhoun is a proven winner going 42-15 in his last 5 seasons at Air Force. That kind of sustained success at a service academy is extremely impressive. He has also won 4 consecutive bowl games. He has made a run at the conference title multiple times in recent years despite having significantly more barriers to running a football program than his competitors. This skill set would certainly be necessary with a demanding administration like we have uptown.

He has also out recruited many AAC schools in recent years despite leading a service academy. Recruiting ties in Texas will come in handy for the next head coach of the green wave.

For those worried about the triple option, I can guarantee he has run other offensive concepts. Take a look at the offensive coaching personnel for the Houston Texans in 2006. Recognize any of the names that helped him craft his offense? Shanahan? McDaniel?

Still not sold? Look at this article from 2015. Trust the football people. This could be a major hire for the wave.
