Wave Tops Memphis 31-21

Well, that one was never going to be easy. Lots of misery for myself and the wave at the liberty bowl, but not this team, not tonight. Wave rolls into Memphis and takes down the home town tigers 31-21! Let’s get into the recap

First and foremost shout out to Green Wave Man, a loyal Twitter follower and friend getting the love he deserves from the national media with the boys on espn(no 2, no U).

We exchanged a couple of 3 and outs to start. Not a lot to say really except we need to get better depth on those 3rd and short routes. Know where the sticks are at all times.

Second defensive drive in need of a spark and who else but Tony Turnover Beads himself, Lance Robinson. Just an awesome catch here to get the wave defense going. I don’t have the stats in front of me, but I’ll bet my game worn Nick Montana jersey that Lance leads the nation in picks. He gets one every game

After a turnover at midfield, you gotta get 6. Pratt with a gorgeous back shoulder ball to Chris Brazzel to get us started

Followed by a big run from Mahki “RB1” Hughes. This run kicked off a banner night for the freshman. Willie’s confidence in the kid was rewarded.

Thought shaadie was coming on to take the kids glory but no, Willie was just having a little fun with us. Touchdown Tulane, from former RB1 now FB1 Mahki Hughes.

Couple more punts exchanged after the initial touchdown. No idea why we’re swapping punters in and out but special teams was good tonight.

The next scoring possession was a scary one. Pratt through about 5 interceptions in one drive and yet he finished with 0 for the game. Thank god Memphis’s dbs cannot catch. I will say the 4th down fastball was a thing of beauty. 98 on the black to get 4 yards. Also, love to see 7 rumbling stumbling and bumbling.

I fundamentally don’t believe in kicking inside the 10. Love Valentino but if you’re in goal to go, you gotta stick it in for the tuddy. Anyhow, good to see Jersey Justin Tucker. 10-0 Wave

The final two defensive drives of the second half were abysmal. Secondary couldn’t cover a damn thing and the pass rush was always just a second from getting home. I hope I never see the name Blankumsee again. Wave really should’ve led at halftime. I remained confident going into the half but to be the better team and down always stinks.Sure Willie could’ve kicked on our last offensive drive but as I said, nobody likes field goals. 14-10 tigers at the break.

Second half

I expected the wave to come out of the break and make some adjustments to slow down the Memphis passing attack. I’m not convinced the tigers successfully ran the ball once. Blankumsee burns us again and before you know it’s 21-10 Memphis. 21 unanswered, a tough pill to swallow.

In desperate need of an answer, it starts with special teams. Great kick return there by Shedro. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been the factor we hoped in the backfield so it’s great to see him contributing on teams. No idea why there’s no footage of this in the twittesphere so here’s a guerry tweet instead .

Down 21-10, in need of a drive and boy did they deliver. Big run after big run from mahki. I particularly love the decision to run on third and long. Shout out to the big fella Chris Carter. 6’4 250 and moving like a receiver. Pratt probably shoulda thrown slightly better ball to get the big man in the end zone but a touchdown is a touchdown. 21-17 Tigers

Quick 3 and out from the defense to maintain momentum, absolutely crucial stop for the D. Pat Jenkins with another sack, he was wreaking havoc all night.

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a massive yulkeith brown fan. Since the Miami central days. This was his welcome to New Orleans drive. The signature madden dig route over the middle for 30 with an absolute dime from Pratt. Second of two throws shown below

The jet sweep was a proud moment for me. Another week another tuddy for Yul. The kids a rising star and I couldn’t be more proud. Touchdown Tulane! 24-21

I still don’t understand how the Pedescleaux interception happened. What could the Memphis receiver possibly have been trying to do. Hell of a play from 8 with the toe tap.

Once again, after a pick you gotta get 6. Who you gonna call on if you need 6 in this offense? Number 6 himself, Lawrence Keys. Shout out Chris Carter with the assist. If that’s not an nfl throw, I don’t know what is. Touchdown Tulane 31-21.

A disgusting act on friend of the program Josh Remetich seals the deal. Classless from Memphis. Shake it off Josh, you deserve a victory snow ball a few days early. I’m going to give zero air time to the OPI on Chris brazzell, almost as bad as the Memphis nut shot. No matter. Wave wins in Memphis. First time in 25 years.
